"By the sacred anointing of the sick and the prayer of the priests the whole Church commends those who are ill to the suffering and glorified Lord, that he may raise them up and save them. And indeed she exhorts them to contribute to the good of the People of God by freely uniting themselves to the Passion and death of Christ."
(Catechism of the Catholic Church #1499)
The Anointing of the Sick is the second of the Church's Sacraments of Healing. It involves an invocation of the Holy Spirit and an anointing with the Oil of the Sick (one of the Church's three Holy Oils). It is appropriate for any baptized Catholic who is in need of physical or even emotional healing. It is very appropriate before undergoing surgery or any major medical procedure. This Sacrament, like Reconciliation and Eucharist can be received any number of times, even in the course of the same illness. While the Anointing of the Sick is sometimes referred to as Last Rites, this is an incorrect usage, as a Sacrament of Healing it is not reserved to those in immediate danger of death. While this Sacrament can be administered to those in serious illness near death, its focus is on prayer for healing, comfort, and consolation. For those in immediate danger of death, the rite of Viaticum or final Reconciliation and Eucharist is more appropriate.
Appointments to receive the Sacrament at the Church, in one's home, or in a hospital can be made by contacting the parish office at (708) 862-4165.

Is any one of you suffering? He should pray. Is anyone cheerful? He should sing praises. Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick. The Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven.…
